Transition to a Carbon-Neutral Society and Promotion of Green Growth
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] The ‘2050 Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee’ of Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, was launched on the 15th at the Citizen Hall. It will take responsibility for achieving carbon neutrality, with net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 as its goal.
The ‘Basic Act on Carbon Neutral Green Growth for Climate Crisis Response’ and the ‘Changwon City Basic Ordinance on Carbon Neutral Green Growth for Climate Crisis Response’ were enacted in March and November of last year, respectively, to promote the transition to a carbon-neutral society and green growth.
Changwon Special City’s ‘2050 Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee’ was launched on the 15th at the Citizen Hall.
The 2050 Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee consists of a total of 26 members, including city council members, experts in fields such as environment, energy, buildings, and transportation, as well as civic groups.
The committee is responsible for deliberating and deciding on ▲carbon neutrality vision ▲setting greenhouse gas reduction targets ▲establishing and evaluating the implementation of climate crisis adaptation measures and basic plans for carbon neutral green growth ▲and ordinances related to the transition to a carbon-neutral society and green growth.
The city aims to reduce 3.7 million tons, which is 40% of the 2018 emission levels, by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The 2050 carbon neutrality plan was completed last year, and from this year, implementation evaluations will be conducted. The plan will be supplemented to include the national basic plan to be announced in March and the metropolitan province plans to be announced thereafter.
Additionally, the city has appointed the Director of the Climate Environment Bureau as the carbon neutrality implementation officer, who will control the work of various departments. The Carbon Neutral Support Center has also been designated at the Changwon Industry Promotion Agency to provide professional and systematic support for carbon neutrality, and preparations for full-scale operation are underway.
At the launch ceremony, appointment letters were presented, and the city’s 2050 carbon neutrality plan and the implementation evaluation of climate crisis adaptation measures were shared.
Mayor Hong Nam-pyo said, “The responsibility and role of local governments, which are the actual agents of carbon neutrality implementation, are increasing,” adding, “We expect the city’s 2050 Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee to play a pivotal role in achieving the 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target and realizing carbon neutrality by 2050.”
