Incheon Business Community: "Semiconductor Specialized Complex Must Be Attracted to Incheon"

Ministry of Industry to Select Specialized Complexes in First Half of This Year
Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok Announces "Establishment of Semiconductor Post-Processing Hub"

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] As the government is preparing to select a semiconductor specialized complex in the first half of this year, representatives of companies in Incheon industrial complexes, members of the National Assembly, and heads of institutions and organizations have agreed to unite their efforts to attract the semiconductor specialized complex to Incheon.

Incheon City announced on the 15th that it held a 'One Heart Resolution Rally to Attract the Semiconductor Specialized Complex to Incheon' during the Incheon Industrial Complex CEO Academy morning lecture at the Ramada Songdo Hotel, with about 200 attendees.

The event was attended by Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok, as well as Assembly members Yang Hyang-ja (Chair of the People Power Party's Special Committee on Strengthening Semiconductor Industry Competitiveness), Yoon Kwan-seok (Chair of the Industry, Trade, Small and Medium Venture Business Committee), Bae Jun-young (Planning and Finance Committee), Jeong Il-young (Industry, Trade, Small and Medium Venture Business Committee), and Bae Jin-gyo (Floor Leader of the Justice Party).

At the resolution rally, Mayor Yoo stated, "With the optimal location for business such as the airport and free economic zone and the growth potential of the semiconductor industry as our weapons, we will definitely attract the specialized complex and develop Incheon into the mecca of semiconductor back-end processing."

On the same day, the city presented the current status and future prospects of the semiconductor industry, and Assembly member Yang Hyang-ja gave a morning lecture titled "The Path to a Science and Technology Hegemony Nation - Becoming a Leading Global Power."

As the government intensifies competition for semiconductor technology hegemony, it announced the 'Strategy to Achieve Semiconductor Superpower' in July last year to overcome this and prepare for the future. Following the enforcement of the 'National Advanced Strategic Industry Act' in August of the same year, it is promoting the designation of strategic industry specialized complexes.

With the selection of specialized complexes scheduled for the first half of this year, Incheon City has been putting all its efforts into the competition to attract the specialized complex, starting with the launch of the Semiconductor Specialized Complex Promotion Committee in October last year, signing industry-academia-research-government MOUs, holding investment attraction briefings, and external promotions.

The city plans to attract the semiconductor specialized complex to create a differentiated semiconductor innovation ecosystem in Songdo, Namdong Industrial Complex, and Yeongjong areas, focusing on infrastructure, workforce development, technology, investment attraction, and materials, parts, and equipment companies, actively driving the government's policy to achieve semiconductor superpower status.

Incheon is home to about 1,300 semiconductor-related materials, parts, and equipment companies, including Amkor Korea and STATS ChipPAC Korea, the world's 2nd and 3rd largest companies in the back-end processing (packaging & testing) sector, as well as Hanmi Semiconductor, a global semiconductor equipment company.
