"The Secret Behind the Praise for Renault XM3, a Hybrid Close to an Electric Car"

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] As the trend of vehicle electrification intensifies, the variety of hybrid cars has also diversified. Manufacturers have continuously released models highlighting their unique characteristics. Renault Korea Motors' compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) XM3 E-Tech hybrid is regarded as the hybrid closest to an electric vehicle.

The technology of the XM3 E-Tech hybrid incorporates the know-how that the Renault Group has accumulated in F1 (Formula One). F1 is the world's premier automobile racing competition where all brands operate teams and compete with their technologies. Renault leads winning teams in F1 and manufactures engines supplied to other teams. The XM3 hybrid system was also developed by integrating the technological expertise Renault showcased in F1.

This car's hybrid system consists of a dual motor system combining a high-voltage starter motor that functions both as a drive electric motor and a generator, paired with a 1.6ℓ gasoline engine and a clutchless multi-mode gearbox. This setup enables high energy efficiency while allowing dynamic driving performance.

The multi-mode gearbox is a hybrid-specific transmission developed under Renault's own patent. It uses a combination of 4 engine gears and 2 electric motor gears. The two electric motor gears allow various combinations, enabling the quick responsiveness and reaction typical of electric vehicles, according to the company. The vehicle can also start and depart in full electric mode at all times.

Additionally, an electronic shift e-shifter is applied, improving performance compared to conventional mechanical systems. The high-voltage starter motor controls engine RPM during gear shifts, matching speed differences between forward and reverse gears before shifting, resulting in a smooth impression.

The XM3 E-Tech hybrid can drive up to 75% in electric vehicle mode in urban areas at speeds below 50 km/h. Depending on the remaining battery capacity and driving speed, there is an EV button that allows 100% electric vehicle mode driving, and a B mode where releasing the accelerator pedal results in deceleration similar to engine braking while charging the battery. Regenerative braking is actively applied. The combined fuel efficiency of this car is 17.4 km per liter.

The design is also different from the existing gasoline model. The F1 Dynamic Blade bumper is standard, and the shapes of the radiator grille and air intake have been revised. Exclusive exterior colors have also been added.
