Gyeonggi Health and Environment Research Institute, Free Radon Measurement for 50 Apartment Complexes

Gyeonggi Health and Environment Research Institute, Free Radon Measurement for 50 Apartment Complexes Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment

[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment Research will conduct free radon testing on 150 households in 50 apartment complexes that are not required to measure radon, in order to alleviate residents' anxiety about the carcinogen 'radon'.

Since 2020, the Institute has been providing free radon testing using the 'long-term measurement method,' which involves attaching radon detection devices to living rooms of selected households for more than 90 days, then collecting them and calculating radon concentration using a radon analyzer.

Park Yong-bae, director of the Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment Research, stated, "Clean indoor air must be a basic right guaranteed to residents who spend more time at home due to COVID-19," adding, "We will provide more free services to alleviate concerns about radon in apartment complexes and improve residents' quality of life."

Meanwhile, last year, radon was measured in 145 households across 52 complexes in the province, with an average concentration of 53.0 Bq/㎥. Among them, 4 households (2.8%) exceeded the recommended radon level for newly built apartment complexes (148 Bq/㎥). The average concentration last year was lower than the 80.9 Bq/㎥ average radon concentration measured in 116 households in 2021 using the short-term continuous measurement method under sealed conditions for two days.
