Jin Jeong-seok "Unable to Produce Assembly Members in Jeju for 20 Years... A Wish"

Restoring Honor to Jeju 4·3 Victims
Promoting Tourism Revitalization

[Asia Economy reporters Hyunju Lee and Youngwon Kim] Jeong Jin-seok, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, appealed for party support on the 13th at the on-site emergency committee meeting held in Jeju, saying, "Since the 2004 general election, there has not been a single member of the National Assembly from our party in Jeju for 20 years."

At the emergency committee meeting held at the Jeju International Free City Development Center that day, Chairman Jeong said, "It is the earnest wish of the People Power Party to produce a National Assembly member from Jeju."

The People Power Party's emergency committee paid respects at the Jeju 4·3 Peace Park in the morning before holding the 3rd Jeju Joint Speech Meeting of the National Assembly. The emergency committee meeting was held immediately afterward.

Chairman Jeong emphasized, "As the ruling party, the People Power Party will do its best to fully resolve the honor restoration of the victims and bereaved families of the 4·3 incident," adding, "We will make every effort to ensure that Jeju becomes a symbol of reconciliation and unity in the Republic of Korea."

He continued, "The biggest concern of Jeju residents is, of course, the economy," and added, "The government is doing its best to revitalize tourism in Jeju. The government and the ruling party will take more meticulous care."

Chairman Jeong also criticized the Democratic Party for directly submitting seven bills to the plenary session, calling it a 'destruction of parliamentary principles.' He explained, "In the case of the Nursing Act, it was hastily pushed through without sufficient coordination of opinions from the relevant standing committee stage," adding, "The proper relationship with other laws has not been established, and since there is a high risk of undermining the organic relationship between professions, it is a bill that requires sufficient social discussion."

He then pointed out, "It seems the Democratic Party is aiming for 'Chaos Korea,'" and said, "They want to plunge our entire society into great confusion and find a way to survive within that chaos. Isn't that the Democratic Party's intention?"

He also said, "To resist the Democratic Party's damage to the separation of powers and legislative dictatorship, we have no choice but to request the president to exercise the veto power," adding, "They act as if they can freely wield the legislative, executive, and judicial branches with just a majority in the legislature. What would former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun say if they saw the Democratic Party now?"
