Police to Conduct Special Crackdown on Economic Security Crimes Until October

[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] The National Police Agency announced on the 13th that it will conduct a special crackdown on crimes threatening economic security, such as industrial technology leakage, until October. This measure comes in response to the anticipated increase in attempts to steal technology from core industries amid the spread of protectionism.

During the special crackdown period, the police will focus on crimes involving the leakage of industrial technology, trade secrets, and defense technology related to defense projects. Since the establishment of the dedicated Economic Security Investigation Division at the headquarters last December, the police plan to mobilize all available resources to carry out intensive enforcement.

Over the past five years (2018?2022), the police have uncovered a total of 557 cases of technology leakage crimes and arrested 1,628 individuals. Notably, last year's crackdown extended the period and expanded the target to include the defense project sector, resulting in approximately a 50% increase in arrests compared to previous years.

This year, the police intend to continue their full-scale response to crimes threatening economic security, actively uncover criminal intelligence through collaboration with related agencies, and maintain efforts to protect and support affected companies. Officers who achieve results during the crackdown will be awarded promotions and commendations.
