Tragic Traffic Accident in Pyeongchang Claims 5 Lives... All Were Korea University Students

On the morning of the 12th, it was revealed that the five university students who died in a traffic accident in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, belonged to a ski club at Korea University.


On the same day, Korea University stated, "We deeply mourn the students who suffered this tragic accident and are carefully verifying the situation and taking necessary measures." Regarding the club the students belonged to, the university explained, "It is not a centrally registered club at the school," adding, "It is a university federation club autonomously formed by students and affiliated with the Korea University Ski Federation." The university requested the police to confirm the exact identities of the deceased students and began investigating the situation.


The police confirmed that the victims attended a ski club federation event at a university in Seoul five hours before the accident, on the previous evening. It was reported that about 100 members of the ski club federation attended the event. The police are investigating the victims' additional movements through closed-circuit television (CCTV) and other means.

At the time of the accident, the vehicle they were in was traveling on a two-lane one-way road near a bridge at the roundabout in Yongsan-ri, Daegwallyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province, at around 1:23 a.m. on the 12th. The vehicle crossed the center line, hit the curb and guardrail, and then caught fire. Firefighters who responded to a report of "a car on fire" extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes, but the vehicle was completely burned. Inside the car, five people presumed to be four men and one woman in their twenties were found dead.


The vehicle involved was a gasoline car, not an electric or hybrid vehicle. The police believe that the victims were unable to escape because the car doors were severely deformed due to the accident.


It is known that they had been conducting winter training at a ski resort in the Pyeongchang area since the 2nd of last month.
