Two More People Wearing Hats Rescued on the Evening of the 11th

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] The South Korean emergency relief team rescued two additional survivors on the evening of the 11th (local time) in the earthquake-affected area of T?rkiye.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 12th, "Our emergency relief team, continuing search and rescue operations in the Antakya area of Hatay Province, T?rkiye, rescued one survivor each at 7:18 PM and 8:18 PM on the 11th at points 1.2 km northeast from the camp."

The survivors were a 17-year-old son and his 51-year-old mother, rescued from the same building. The son was unconscious with his lower body trapped under debris at the time of rescue and was barely breathing. After receiving emergency treatment from our military medical personnel, he was transported to a hospital. The mother was in good health and was also transferred to the hospital.

Considering the earthquake occurred at around 4:17 AM on the 6th, the rescue was made well beyond the approximately 72-hour golden time for survivors.

On that day, the Korean emergency relief team secured the shortest access route to the rescue target using drilling machines and other rescue equipment over five hours, then approached the survivors using precision equipment such as acoustic detectors and succeeded in the rescue.

Earlier that day, the Korean emergency relief team also rescued a 65-year-old woman 1.7 km north-northeast from the camp. The woman's husband, who was buried with her, was also recovered. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the husband is presumed deceased.

Thus, since beginning rescue operations on the 9th, the Korean emergency relief team has rescued a total of eight survivors and recovered 18 bodies. On the first day of operations, the team rescued five people: a man in his mid-70s, a 40-year-old man, a 2-year-old girl, a 35-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old girl.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held an emergency relief headquarters internal task force meeting chaired by Second Vice Foreign Minister Lee Do-hoon on the day following the previous day to review additional support measures. The South Korean government plans to decide on further support measures for the T?rkiye earthquake disaster by comprehensively considering the priority of requests from the Turkish government, the local situation, and the health status of the emergency relief team.

The Korean emergency relief team is scheduled to conduct emergency search and rescue operations for ten days until the 17th.
