Yangcheon-gu 'Senior Nutrition Class' Fills Nutritional Blind Spots

Practical training combined with professional nutritionist theory and customized cooking secrets, recruiting 20 participants until March 2

From March 9 to May 4, held every Thursday at Sinwol Health Center from 10 a.m. for 2 hours, a total of 8 sessions



[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that it is operating the ‘Senior Nutrition Class’ for elderly men who have difficulty managing their meals, to help them enjoy a healthy old age through balanced meals, and is recruiting 20 applicants until March 2.


The ‘Senior Nutrition Class’ with professional nutritionists is a health program that has been greatly loved by the elderly, producing 120 graduates since its first operation in 2017.


Divided into ‘Healthy Eating Education’ and ‘Cooking Class,’ the program combines theory and practical training. In ‘Healthy Eating Education,’ topics include ▲the roles of the five major nutrients and color foods ▲seasonal ingredients and dishes ▲the importance of vegetables and grains ▲the importance of breakfast ▲and natural ingredients. In the main practical session, the ‘Cooking Class,’ participants learn customized cooking such as beginner meals, birthday meals, and healthy meals, and recipes that can be made with family will also be provided.

Yangcheon-gu 'Senior Nutrition Class' Fills Nutritional Blind Spots

The course runs from March 9 to May 4, every Thursday for a total of 8 sessions, held on the 4th floor of the nutrition classroom at Sinwol Health Center, starting at 10 a.m. for about 2 hours.


The course is open to male elderly residents of Yangcheon-gu aged 65 and over, with 20 spots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those wishing to participate can apply by visiting or calling Sinwol Health Center.


A district official said, “While previous cooking class participants were mostly women and newlyweds, this program targets elderly men who are prone to nutritional blind spots, and it is characterized by going beyond simple cooking education to enable empathy and communication among peers.”


Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We operate the ‘Senior Nutrition Class’ using ‘cooking’ as a medium to invigorate the daily lives of elderly people who may become lethargic after retirement,” and added, “We hope many elderly people interested in this program, which allows them to feel a sense of accomplishment through cooking together and form community networks, will participate.”
