[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida underwent surgery on the 11th at a hospital in Tokyo to treat sinusitis (chronic sinus infection), Kyodo News reported.

According to the report, the surgery lasted about 3 hours and 40 minutes, and the postoperative progress was smooth. Since general anesthesia was administered, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno temporarily assumed the prime minister's duties under the Cabinet Act during the surgery.

Prime Minister Kishida returned to his duties as prime minister on the same day and is scheduled to revisit the hospital on the 12th for postoperative care. From the 13th onward, he plans to work at the Prime Minister's Official Residence as usual.

It is known that Prime Minister Kishida has been receiving treatment for sinusitis since November last year. At a regular press conference the day before, Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno explained the prime minister's symptoms, saying, "He has chronic nasal congestion and other symptoms," and added, "He is undergoing surgery to ensure that his official duties are not affected in the future."
