Formation of 30 Filmmakers Memorial Committee
Screening of About 10 Representative Works in May
Filmmakers including Bong Joon-ho and Ahn Sung-ki will hold a memorial exhibition in May to mark the first anniversary of the late Kang Soo-yeon.
According to the film industry on the 9th, more than 30 filmmakers who worked with the late actress recently formed the "Actor Kang Soo-yeon 1st Anniversary Memorial Committee." The committee includes director Im Kwon-taek, former Busan Film Festival executive chairman Kim Dong-ho, directors Bong Joon-ho and Yeon Sang-ho, and actors Ahn Sung-ki, Lee Deok-hwa, and Kwon Hae-hyo.
The committee will screen about 10 films featuring the late actress from May 6 to 9. The lineup includes Kang Soo-yeon's representative work "The Surrogate Woman" (1986), which won her the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival, as well as "Mimi and Cheolsu's Youth Sketch" (1987), "Aje Aje Bara Aje" (1989), "The Road to the Racetrack" (1991), "Trout" (1999), "Virgin's Dinner" (1998), and "Gathering the Moonlight" (2010).
The screenings will take place on May 6 at the Korean Film Archive Cinematheque in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and from May 7 to 9 at Megabox Seongsu. The memorial committee plans to hold post-screening talks (GV) with the audience.
Kang Soo-yeon was the first Korean actor to win the Best Actress award at one of the world's three major film festivals (Cannes, Venice, Berlin) when she received the award at the Venice Film Festival in 1987, earning her the title of "World Star." She passed away at the age of 56 last year after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage at her home in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and remaining unconscious while receiving hospital treatment.
Her final work, "Jung-E" (directed by Yeon Sang-ho), was released on the online streaming service Netflix on the 20th of last month.
