Busan Office of Education and Dong-gu Office Join Hands for Regional Education Development

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education and Dong-gu Office of Busan have joined hands to develop local education by strengthening public education, focusing on the on-site establishment of the high school credit system and improving English proficiency.

The Busan Office of Education has designated Gyeongnam Girls' High School in Dong-gu as a research school for the high school credit system, and Teresa Girls' High School, Busan High School, and Geumseong High School as preparatory schools for the high school credit system, respectively. Through this, they plan to lead changes in high school education with a customized curriculum that supports student growth, moving away from entrance exam and competition-centered education.

In particular, Gyeongnam Girls' High School is currently constructing a space for online class attendance and will complete the construction in February to utilize it for classes starting from the new semester.

Additionally, to establish a foundation for the high school credit system, they are operating the "High School Credit System School Space Creation Project," which involves rearranging or remodeling learning spaces, common areas, and support spaces to create school spaces suitable for flexible curriculum operation under the credit system.

Gyeongnam Girls' High School and Teresa Girls' High School will complete the project in February this year and operate the credit system-type subject classroom system from March. Busan High School and Geumseong High School plan to build school spaces by February 2024 with project costs of 1.2 to 1.3 billion KRW each.

The Dong-gu Office will invest 100 million KRW in support funds for the future education district designated last year into program operation costs in collaboration with the community to strengthen the capabilities of general high schools.

The two institutions are also working to improve English proficiency. On December 29 last year, the Busan English Library and Dong-gu Children's English Library signed a business agreement to revitalize English reading education.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will cooperate in ▲supporting native English instructor programs ▲providing Book Dream books ▲sharing English reading programs.

They are striving to activate fun, play-centered English programs so that children in Dong-gu can become closer to English books.

Support for improving practical English skills and strengthening public education will also be enhanced. Four schools?Suseong Elementary, Beomil Elementary, Choryang Elementary, and Sujeong Elementary?will each receive 2 million KRW in learning support funds for using the AI English speaking system "AI PengTalk."

During vacations, 400,000 to 600,000 KRW per school will be provided for operating on-campus English camps, and one additional native English assistant teacher will be assigned to elementary and middle schools in Dong-gu that wish to participate, to be involved in regular classes, free after-school classes, and one-on-one conversations.

Ha Yun-su, Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, "We will cooperate with Dong-gu Office and reflect the diverse demands of schools and parents in Dong-gu to achieve educational development in Dong-gu," adding, "We will concentrate the administrative power and budget of the Office of Education to ensure balanced educational development in Busan without bias toward any particular area."

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education signed an agreement with Dong-gu Office in 2018 and has been conducting various collaborations for local educational development, such as operating the "Happy Education District," which builds a village education community where schools and the community cooperate to realize trusted public education and regional co-growth.
