[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] The ‘Imran Yeongcheon Fortress Recapture Battle,’ the first land battle of the Imjin War to reclaim a fortress, has been introduced in the social studies regional textbook for elementary schools in the Yeongcheon area as of the 9th.
The 'Imran Yeongcheon Fortress Recovery Battle' is featured in comic format in elementary school textbooks in the Yeongcheon area.
The social studies regional textbook, included in the curriculum for 3rd-grade elementary students, is used for localized learning in social studies for elementary students.
The Imran Yeongcheon Fortress Recapture Battle is featured in the second unit of this textbook, under the section ‘Old Stories of Our Hometown,’ presented in a comic illustration format to help lower-grade elementary students easily understand the history of the Yeongcheon militia.
The Imran Yeongcheon Fortress Recapture Battle holds significant meaning in the history of the Imjin War, being evaluated in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty as ‘the greatest victory comparable to Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s achievements.’
The battle is highly significant as the Changui Jeongyong Army, a coalition of militias from about ten regions around Yeongcheon, organized a counterattack against the rapidly advancing Japanese forces, leading to victory and fostering the belief that the Japanese army could be defeated in battle.
The social studies regional textbook also highlights that many common people, including warriors, Confucian scholars, and militia, participated in the battle and led to victory, which is expected to play a positive role in teaching the younger generation correct history, the courageous spirit of their ancestors, and instilling pride in their region.
Choi Ki-moon, Mayor of Yeongcheon, said, “The Imran Yeongcheon Fortress Recapture Battle can be counted among the most proud historical events of our region,” and added, “We will do our best to ensure that the Imran Yeongcheon Fortress Recapture Battle is widely recognized as a major battle in the history of the Imjin War in all middle and high school history textbooks nationwide by conducting nationwide academic seminars and research projects.”
Mayor Choi also added, “Starting this year, Yeongcheon City plans to directly hold the Imran Yeongcheon Fortress Recapture Battle commemorative ceremony as an official ritual event to continuously establish the identity of the militia city.”
