[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Global advanced materials chemical company KCC announced on the 9th that it has launched the country's first organic water-based fireproof coating, the ‘FIREMASK AQ-Series,’ and is beginning full-scale sales.
The newly developed product dries approximately four times faster than conventional oil-based fireproof coatings, allowing up to two applications per day. This not only shortens construction periods but also minimizes coating defects during transportation and installation after painting, thereby reducing quality risks. Additionally, it minimizes VOC (volatile organic compounds) content (below 30g/l) and is a halogen-free product that contains no harmful substances that destroy the ozone layer.
Fireproof coatings function to protect lives and property by delaying the temperature rise of steel structures during building fires through the foaming of the coating applied to the steel, preventing building collapse and fire spread. The organic water-based fireproof coating maintains excellent fire resistance performance while replacing the resin of the coating with a water-soluble resin, achieving a technological breakthrough and ensuring eco-friendliness. It has obtained fireproof structure certification from the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology and has been selected as an ‘Indoor Mark’ certified product due to its low pollutant emissions in accordance with the Indoor Air Quality Control Act.
A KCC official stated, "As various fire accidents continue to occur, causing repeated human and property damage, awareness of the importance of the golden time to save lives from fire is increasing." He added, "KCC is committed to developing functional fireproof coating technology that delays fire spread from high heat and flames, and plans to expand products applying water-based resins that also benefit the environment."
