"Do you avoid the right and proper path because it's tough?"
"Constitutional Court, don't be intimidated by the prosecutor regime"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] As the motion to impeach Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, led by the Democratic Party of Korea, passed the National Assembly the day before, Democratic Party lawmaker Yoon Gun-young stated, "There were no defections from the Democratic Party."
On the 9th, on MBC's 'Kim Jong-bae's Focus,' Rep. Yoon said, "Numerically, that's correct, and rather, looking at abstentions from the People Power Party side, although the number is small, it appears there were some defections."
It is known that People Power Party lawmakers including Kwon Eun-hee voted in favor of the impeachment.
Regarding the analysis of the 'impeachment backlash,' Rep. Yoon said, "We held discussions through a party meeting. Through the discussion process, we gathered consensus, and as you just mentioned, there were no defections at all." He added, "Looking at the impeachment process, there were no procedural flaws, and the grounds for impeachment were very clear. We must take the right and proper path, and just because that path is difficult and tough, we cannot avoid or refuse to take it."
However, whether the impeachment motion will be accepted by the Constitutional Court remains uncertain. Rep. Yoon said, "If the Constitutional Court judges based on law and principles and reasonably from the public's perspective, I believe it will naturally be accepted," adding, "But we must not be intimidated in front of the prosecutorial regime."
He continued, "Of course, since the impeachment prosecutor is Rep. Kim Do-eup (People Power Party), there may be various difficulties," but "if Rep. Kim also acts according to law and principles, I believe a normal outcome will be reached."
The Presidential Office stated that this will be "recorded as a shameful history in legislative affairs." Rep. Yoon said, "Before impeachment, it would be right for Minister Lee to resign voluntarily, and if not, the president should dismiss him," adding, "A precious life of 159 people was lost, yet no one has taken responsibility, and they act as if they have done nothing wrong and are rather proud. Because of this attitude, impeachment was inevitable."
