[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is conducting illegal industrial waste dumping prevention education by directly visiting local community leaders who are most familiar with the local conditions to prevent damage to residents caused by illegal industrial waste dumping.
This is due to the recent frequent cases where land rented in rural areas is quickly piled with waste and abandoned, or farmland is contaminated with soil mixed with waste under the pretext of providing good soil fill.
There have also been cases where forest land is rented at prices higher than the market rate and used as illegal waste dumping sites.
Accordingly, the province will conduct education sessions targeting community leaders and neighborhood chiefs familiar with local conditions on topics such as suspicious cases of illegal dumping, methods for residents to report, and the industrial waste reporting reward system operated by Gyeonggi Province, across 18 cities and counties until the end of April.
First, on the 10th, education will be held at the Yeosu City Hall Situation Room for 40 people including the president and secretary of the Yeosu City Neighborhood Leaders Association and heads of towns and townships. On the 27th, education will be provided to all 96 neighborhood chiefs at the Suraeul Art Hall in Yeoncheon County.
Kim Kyung-seop, Director of the Resource Circulation Division of the province, said, "We expect illegal dumping to be eradicated through this industrial waste illegal dumping prevention education," and urged, "If you suspect any illegal dumping activities nearby, please actively report them by calling 128 (Environmental Hotline) without an area code."
Meanwhile, a reward of up to 3 million KRW is given for reporting illegal industrial waste dumping, landfill, or incineration activities.
