[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province has enrolled all 920,000 citizens in a 'Safety Insurance' plan.

Now in its fifth year, the Citizen Safety Insurance provides up to 20 million KRW in insurance benefits through an insurance company to citizens who suffer injury, disability, or death due to unexpected safety accidents or disasters.

Citizens registered as residents of Seongnam City (including foreigners) are automatically enrolled without any separate procedures.

The insurance coverage period is from February 1 of this year to January 31 of next year. Insurance benefits are paid for damages corresponding to 12 coverage items.

The coverage includes ▲death or disability caused by natural disasters ▲injury death or disability caused by explosions, fires, or collapses ▲injury death or disability while using public transportation ▲death or disability caused by robbery injury ▲treatment costs for traffic accident injuries in school zones for children under 12 ▲legal support for medical accidents ▲compensation for sexual violence crimes and injury medical expenses, among others.

Among these, death insurance (10 million KRW) and disability insurance (up to 10 million KRW) due to natural disasters are newly added coverage items this time.

Injury death while using public transportation pays 20 million KRW in insurance benefits.

Compensation is provided even if the individual has personal indemnity or life insurance coverage.

However, death of persons under 15 years old is excluded from insurance benefits according to Article 732 of the Commercial Act.

When an insurance claim event occurs, the insured citizen or legal heir can submit supporting documents and claim the insurance benefits at the Citizen Safety Insurance Integrated Consultation Center.
