Daejeon Water and Sewage Fees 'Realization'... "Increase Inevitable" Due to Accumulated Deficit

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Water and sewage fees in Daejeon are expected to increase starting May this year. This is a step to adjust the fees considering the accumulated deficit.

According to Daejeon City on the 8th, the Welfare and Environment Committee of the Daejeon City Council approved the "Partial Amendment to the Daejeon City Water Supply Ordinance" and the "Partial Amendment to the Daejeon City Sewage Usage Ordinance" as originally proposed the day before.

The amendment includes an annual increase of 9% for water supply fees and 11.2% for sewage fees from May this year (payment notification) until 2025.

Reflecting the fee increase, household water supply fees (per 1㎥) will be gradually raised to 510 KRW this year, 560 KRW next year, and 610 KRW from 2025 onward.

Household sewage fees (per 1㎥) are also expected to rise to 420 KRW this year, 470 KRW next year, and 530 KRW from 2025 onward.

The increase in water and sewage fees is interpreted as the city's desperate measure to cover the accumulated deficit. Previously, the city froze sewage fees since 2019, resulting in an accumulated deficit of 57.7 billion KRW.

Accordingly, the city plans to gradually cover the deficit by adjusting the fees to a realistic level.

Meanwhile, the City Council is scheduled to process the amendment at the 3rd plenary session of the extraordinary meeting on the 10th of this month.
