"Warm Weather, Beware of Ice Breaking Accidents"

No Entry to Areas at Risk of Ice Breaking

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety requested special caution on the 8th to prevent safety accidents caused by melting ice on lakes and reservoirs as the weather warms after Ipchun (the beginning of spring) on the 4th.

"Warm Weather, Beware of Ice Breaking Accidents"

Over the past three years, safety accidents caused by people entering frozen lakes, reservoirs, or rivers and breaking the ice have been increasing annually. According to data from the National Fire Agency, there have been a total of 137 incidents resulting in 9 deaths and 5 injuries.

Ice play during periods of rapidly rising temperatures, like these days, can easily lead to unexpected accidents, so special caution is necessary.

Lee Myung-su, Director of the Prevention Safety Division at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, emphasized, “During periods of rapidly rising temperatures like now, even if the ice appears thick and solid like in midwinter, it can break easily. For safety, people should not go onto the ice on lakes or reservoirs.”
