Delegation from Mongolia’s Bayangol District, an Overseas Sister City, Conducts 5-Night, 6-Day Visit to Benchmark Seongdong-gu’s Administrative System and Expand Private Sector Exchanges

Enhancing the Global Image of Seongdong through Cultural and Economic Exchanges, Including a Friendship Exchange Agreement with Seongsu 2-ga 1-dong Residents’ Autonomous Committee

Why Did the Mongolian Delegation Show Interest in Seongdong-gu Smart Shelter? On the 2nd, Seongdong-gu Office held a meeting between Seongdong-gu and the Bayangol District delegation from Mongolia.

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that a delegation from Mongolia’s Bayangol District, its overseas sister city, officially visited Seongdong-gu for 5 nights and 6 days starting on the 1st.

The delegation, composed of the mayor and council members of Bayangol District, stayed in Korea during the visit to experience Seongdong-gu’s administrative culture and excellent facilities, holding a commemorative ceremony to strengthen exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

First, the Seongdong-gu Volunteer Center, the Seongdong Branch of the Korea Freedom Federation, and the National Public and Private Daycare Center Association joined forces to donate 60 boxes of daycare educational materials and toys, contributing to the welfare improvement of infants and toddlers in Bayangol District.

During the delegation meeting, including the mayors of both districts, close consultations were held regarding the creation of the “Mongolian Seongdong Forest” to prevent desertification in Mongolia and achieve carbon neutrality, an issue of international concern.

The Seongdong Forest project was initiated to help improve global environmental issues, with a business agreement signed with Bayangol District in August 2019 to plant 1,000 trees over three years at Mongolia’s Agro Park.

After a pause in exchanges due to COVID-19, volunteers from Seongdong-gu visited Mongolia in July last year and planted about 350 trees on the Seongdong Forest site, bringing the total planted trees to 700 so far. The remaining 300 trees are planned to be planted in July to complete the Seongdong Forest.

On the 3rd, a friendship exchange agreement was signed between the Seongsu 2-ga 1-dong Residents’ Autonomous Committee and Bayangol District’s 1st, 13th, and 17th subdistricts, opening a venue for expanded private exchanges involving residents of both cities. The residents’ autonomous committee’s performance, held in traditional Mongolian costumes, was a scene of cultural exchange offering both entertainment and emotional impact.

Additionally, the visiting delegation toured excellent local facilities such as the Seongdong-gu Smart City Integrated Operation Center and the Resource Recovery Center for benchmarking, and held meetings with the Chamber of Commerce and the Sports Association to discuss economic and cultural cooperation between the two cities.

Seongdong-gu established a sister city relationship with Mongolia’s Bayangol District in August 2018 and has actively promoted practical exchanges in various fields to date.

Sumiyabatar, Mayor of Bayangol District, said, “I was deeply impressed by Seongdong-gu’s excellent facilities such as the integrated control system, smart shelters, and smart crosswalks, as well as the warm hospitality of Seongdong-gu. I express my gratitude to Mayor Jung Won-oh for creating this opportunity, and I will actively cooperate with Seongdong-gu going forward.”

Seongdong-gu Mayor Jung Won-oh stated, “This visit has opened the door to international exchange projects that had been dormant due to COVID-19,” adding, “We will discover various private exchange projects tailored to the characteristics of our sister cities and lay the foundation for becoming a world-class international city.”
