[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] It is estimated that only 290,000 members are using Twitter's paid verification service, 'Twitter Blue.'
On the 7th (local time), the U.S. IT specialized media The Information obtained and analyzed internal Twitter data and reported that as of mid-January, the number of 'Twitter Blue' members in the U.S. is 180,000, and the total global subscribers are estimated to be 290,000.
Twitter Blue is a paid subscription service created to generate revenue after Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, acquired Twitter. Users can pay $9 on the web (approximately 9,840 KRW) or $11 on Apple devices (approximately 13,530 KRW) to access services such as tweet editing, uploading high-definition videos, and increased tweet exposure frequency.
Additionally, service users can use the 'Blue Check' feature, which indicates that the account user is the actual person. Previously, only verified accounts of public figures such as politicians, celebrities, and journalists could use the Blue Check feature.
Musk plans to secure half of the company's revenue through paid subscription services like 'Twitter Blue,' but considering the current membership level, experts say the target is far from being met.
According to IT media Engadget, Twitter's annual revenue target for this year is $3 billion (3.8 trillion KRW), but based on the global membership of 290,000, the annual subscription revenue from 'Twitter Blue' is only $27.8 million (approximately 35 billion KRW).
To expand revenue, Twitter is reportedly considering granting 'Gold' verification badges to corporate accounts and charging $1,000 per month, as well as introducing premium paid accounts for individual members to use the service without ads.
