The Gwangju Metropolitan Council announced on the 7th that the "Gwangju Metropolitan City Ordinance on the Excavation, Preservation, and Management of Japanese Colonial Resistance Period Relics," proposed by Assemblyman Park Sugi (Democratic Party of Korea, Gwangsan-gu 5), has passed the plenary session.
The ordinance stipulates the necessary matters for managing Japanese military facilities, which have been continuously discovered throughout downtown Gwangju, including Hwajeong-dong and Ssangchon-dong, as "Japanese Colonial Resistance Period relics."
It was prepared to remember the historical lessons of the Japanese colonial resistance period and pass them on to future generations.
The main contents include ▲definition of Japanese Colonial Resistance Period relics ▲establishment of a basic plan and actual condition survey ▲implementation of excavation, preservation, and management projects for relics ▲financial support ▲formation and operation of a committee.
Assemblyman Park said, "The recently discovered Japanese military facilities are important relics that reveal the war ambitions of Japan during the Japanese colonial resistance period, forced mobilization, and the horrors of human rights violations," adding, "Based on this ordinance, the relics from the Japanese colonial resistance period, which had been neglected in indifference, will be systematically managed as historical and cultural assets, and furthermore, they can be utilized as part of tourism resources such as dark tourism."
