[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] The Seo-gu District Office of Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim I-gang) announced on the 7th that it is operating a ‘Bicycle Safety Insurance’ for residents to use bicycles safely.
The Bicycle Safety Insurance is automatically enrolled without a separate subscription process for all Seo-gu residents and foreign registrants who have their resident registration in Seo-gu.
It covers accidents that occur while riding a bicycle or injuries caused by bicycles on the road, excluding PM (Personal Mobility) devices such as electric kickboards or electric scooters.
The coverage includes ▲death accidents (excluding those under 15 years old) up to 10 million KRW ▲permanent disability up to 10 million KRW ▲diagnosis lump sum of 100,000 to 500,000 KRW (for 4 to 8 weeks or more) ▲hospitalization consolation money of 100,000 KRW for hospital stays of 6 days or more ▲fines for bicycle accidents caused while riding up to 20 million KRW ▲attorney fees up to 2 million KRW ▲and traffic accident handling support funds up to 30 million KRW.
To apply for insurance benefits, submit the claim form along with supporting documents such as diagnosis certificates and hospital admission/discharge confirmation via fax or email.
A Seo-gu official said, “With the increase in bicycle users due to the climate crisis, bicycle-related safety accidents are also rising. We hope that through the Bicycle Safety Insurance, residents can ride bicycles safely and enjoyably while practicing carbon neutrality.”
