[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Professor Choi Sang-rim of the Department of Radiology at Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital has been honored with the Grand Prize of the 'Hanmi Essay Literature Award.'

Hanmi Pharmaceutical announced on the 7th that it held the '22nd Hanmi Essay Literature Award' ceremony at its headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul, presenting plaques and prize money to 14 awardees. The prize money is 10 million KRW for the grand prize, 5 million KRW each for three excellence awards, and 3 million KRW each for ten encouragement awards.

The Hanmi Essay Literature Award is a literary award in the medical field established in 2001 by Hanmi Pharmaceutical and Young Doctor to foster trust between patients and doctors. The grand prize winner is officially recognized as an essay writer through the publication 'Hanguk Sanmun.' The judging panel consisted of novelist Seong Seok-je (chairman), novelist Jang Kang-myeong, and literary critic Park Hye-jin, who represent the Korean literary scene.

This year, 126 works depicting various stories directly experienced by doctors in medical settings were submitted to the Hanmi Essay Literature Award, showing a high competition rate of 9 to 1. The judging panel commented, "Reading the 126 submissions this year, we could delicately observe the worries, conflicts, realizations, embarrassments, resolutions, and reflections experienced by doctors within the triangular bond of patients, caregivers, and doctors."

In particular, regarding Professor Choi’s grand prize-winning work, 'The Military Song of a Breast Cancer Patient,' they praised it as "a work that blends two people?doctor and patient?who were divided like black and white, creating a single color called 'life.' It is a shining piece reflecting careful observation of the patient's mind facing a long treatment process and contemplation on the 'hospital' as a space-time where the doctor's daily life and the patient's extraordinary life meet."

A Hanmi Pharmaceutical official stated, "We have continuously supported this literary award with the aim of creating a communication channel through essays containing the special experiences and emotions unique to medical staff in the field, enabling patients and doctors to understand and empathize with each other." They added, "We will continue to support the Hanmi Essay Literature Award so that it firmly establishes itself as a pure literary event representing the medical community."
