Hanjin Conducts On-site Health Checkups for Delivery Workers... "Committed to Improving Working Conditions"

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Hanjin announced on the 7th that it will conduct on-site health checkups at over 100 delivery terminals nationwide by April for about 10,000 delivery workers, including delivery drivers, trunk drivers, and branch managers.

Hanjin was the first in the industry to announce measures in October 2020 to prevent overwork among delivery drivers, including ▲establishing health protection measures for delivery drivers ▲suspending late-night deliveries ▲gradually deploying 1,000 sorting support personnel ▲expanding investment in terminal automation. Since 2021, it has been supporting annual health checkups once a year by bearing 450 million KRW annually.

Considering the difficulty for delivery drivers to visit hospitals due to their work conditions, since the 5th of last month, a medical examination bus has been visiting 1,700 delivery workers in the Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong regions. By April, the bus will sequentially visit over 100 Hanjin delivery terminals nationwide, including Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, and Mokpo, to conduct health checkups.

The examination items focus on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases considering the nature of delivery drivers’ work, including job stress tests, electrocardiograms, and special blood tests to prevent overwork. Additionally, about 60 items such as blood tests, lipid metabolism, hypertension, liver function, and arthritis are checked.

Hanjin plans to continue supporting annual regular health checkups to protect the health of delivery drivers. It is improving working conditions by implementing a delivery worker healthcare solution for overwork prevention and proactive health management, and developing delivery-use ‘electric carts’ for safe delivery operations. The company is fully committed to creating a healthy and safe workplace. Furthermore, it is expanding the introduction of automation equipment at nationwide sub-terminals to improve the work convenience of delivery workers.

A Hanjin official said, “Our company is faithfully implementing measures to prevent overwork of delivery drivers, including health protection measures for delivery drivers. We will continue to make every effort to improve working conditions for mutual growth with delivery drivers and safe operations.”
