On the 6th (local time), President Biden stated through his official Twitter account, "I extend my deepest condolences to the victims of the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria," and added, "I have instructed that all possible support be spared as we closely monitor the situation in Turkiye."
Earlier that day, at 4:17 a.m., a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck about 33 km from the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep. It is the strongest earthquake recorded in Turkiye since December 1939, and it is estimated that about 1,800 people have died so far in Turkiye and neighboring Syria.
