Park Wan-su, Governor of Gyeongnam Province, "Low Integrity Leads to Loss of Residents' Trust"

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] “In the 2022 comprehensive integrity evaluation, we received the second highest grade nationwide among cities and provinces, and we must strengthen institutional improvements and public service inspections to achieve even better results next year.”

Gyeongnam Governor Park Wan-su said this at the heads of departments and bureaus meeting held on the 6th.

Governor Park emphasized, “Integrity is the foremost virtue of public officials,” adding, “If integrity is low, the provincial administration cannot gain the trust of the residents.”

“Since the 8th local government term began, policies promoted by the province such as the development of the southern coast tourism have been reflected in government policies, and the provincial administration’s evaluation has improved,” he said. “We will carefully manage not only the integrity evaluation results and government policy achievements but also cases that have damaged the province’s reputation, and reflect them in personnel decisions.”

Governor Park mentioned a resident proposal from the first residents’ meeting that professional management is needed to identify welfare blind spots.

He said, “People say that the thresholds for various welfare policies are high due to complicated documents and procedures,” and ordered, “We need to improve the system to simplify the application process and proactively find welfare blind spots so that support can be provided without separate applications.”

He also urged efforts for follow-up management of residents’ opinions gathered through visits to cities and counties and residents’ meetings, and for reflecting them in provincial administration.

“We must alleviate residents’ hardships caused by rising prices such as heating and transportation costs,” he said. “Although there are limits to the province’s price management, please work hard on administrative guidance to adjust the timing of public utility fee increases and prevent unnecessary spread of price hike sentiments.”

Regarding Robot Land, where litigation has ended, he requested measures to revitalize operations and normalize the second phase of the project, and to consider holding tourism and leisure investment briefings linked with the Zainichi Korean residents’ association.

On the same day, Governor Park also spoke about the development plan for the Korea-US space alliance discussed during his meeting on the 2nd with Foreign Minister Park Jin and NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

He said, “Gyeongnam, the center of the aerospace industry, must participate in the government’s efforts for Korea-US space technology cooperation,” and added, “Let our province play an active role in the Korea-US Space Forum to be held in the second half of the year.”

Regarding the talent cultivation strategy meeting held on the 1st under the president’s chairmanship, he said, “Government-led university financial support is shifting to region-led initiatives, emphasizing the cultivation of advanced technology personnel,” and ordered, “Prepare thoroughly to accommodate these government policies.”

He also mentioned that the Jeongwol Daeboreum events such as Daljip burning over the past weekend concluded without incidents or accidents, and requested efforts to prevent spring wildfires.
