[Opinion] "I Still Remember Those Words from That Time"

[Opinion] "I Still Remember Those Words from That Time"

Not long ago, an employee from my previous company reached out to me with courage, holding a book I had written. "CEO, when I was going through a difficult time, you encouraged me by saying, 'If you are in a valley, all that remains is to climb up afterward.' That phrase still has a great impact on my life and gives me strength to overcome challenges whenever they arise."

In fact, I only vaguely knew that employee’s name and did not remember them well. They were just one among hundreds of employees, and I couldn’t recall what I had said to them. Yet, my small words had a significant impact on their life. Interestingly, the executives I was close to and spoke with often never mentioned such things, but an ordinary employee remembered and was deeply influenced by my simple words.

I once read an interview with a famous announcer. He was just an ordinary boy attending a rural school. One day, during Korean language class, the teacher praised him, saying, "Wow, you have a good voice. You could be an announcer." From that day on, he dreamed of becoming an announcer. After succeeding, he went back to thank the teacher, but the teacher had no memory of saying that.

I also recall when I was a new employee, a manager took responsibility and solved a problem for me when I was struggling. When I made a big mistake and was upset, he encouraged me, saying, "That’s normal for a newcomer. Don’t worry. I’ll handle it." Much later, when I met him again and shared this story, he did not remember it.

People often think they are influenced by great lectures or words from remarkable individuals, but surprisingly, a single small phrase from someone can have a profound impact on one’s life. Especially during difficult times, a warm word from a senior or recognition when one’s talents are not yet discovered can greatly move a person’s life.

Moreover, the impact is even greater on those who do not often receive recognition or praise compared to those who frequently do.

Therefore, we must remember that even without saying grand things, we can influence many people. Especially during school years, a single word from a teacher or professor, and in professional life, a word from a boss, executive, coach, or respected leader can have a significant impact on someone’s life. This is even more true for ordinary-looking people or those in difficult situations.

Conversely, negative influences work similarly. A small phrase that one does not even remember can cause someone else to feel discouraged. Unintentional words can lead to misunderstandings and sometimes break trust. I also make mistakes often. Perhaps I have said small words that brought despair to someone just as I have helped others.

Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to individuals, find their strengths, and encourage and recognize them. This is especially true for those with great influence. Of course, excessive praise without sincerity will be revealed over time. Sincerity is more important than frequency. We need to remember that even a leader’s small words can provide great help to many people.
