Gwangju Dong-gu Launches 'Alley Regeneration' to Revitalize Old Downtown Area

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 6th that it will officially promote the ‘Dong-gu Style Alley Regeneration Project’ to revitalize the value of the old downtown alleys that contain the region’s history, culture, and residents’ lives.

Gwangju Dong-gu Launches 'Alley Regeneration' to Revitalize Old Downtown Area

Since April last year, Dong-gu established the ‘Dong-gu Style Alley Regeneration Basic Plan’ by reflecting the opinions of a professional advisory group to analyze the current status and characteristics of the old downtown alleys and to set a unique direction for alley regeneration, ahead of the nationwide first alley regeneration project conducted by a local autonomous district.

The professional advisory group proposed ▲ conducting surveys on historical and cultural resources such as modern and contemporary buildings in the old downtown ▲ rediscovering the value of tangible and intangible assets and creating an urban brand that contains Dong-gu’s unique value ▲ promoting policies that materialize the improvement of residents’ quality of life through urban design revitalization.

The service provider, M Planning Architectural Office, shared at the final report meeting held on the 2nd ▲ basic status survey and analysis of the old downtown alleys ▲ basic plan and guidelines for alley regeneration ▲ promotion plans by project type and stage ▲ various existing policies related to the old downtown currently underway and linkage plans.

To this end, Dong-gu plans to actively collaborate with related departments to overcome the limitations of existing urban development (regeneration) projects by linking with old downtown policies such as the Urban Regeneration New Deal project, Commercial District Renaissance project, Tourism Promotion project, and Humanities Policy project currently underway.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “We will make every effort to ensure that the Dong-gu Style Alley Regeneration Project, which can provide practical benefits to residents, is successfully promoted.”
