Jeju Island Conducts Safety Inspections of Aging Public Sports Facilities in Preparation for Thaw Season

Inspection of Over 40 Public Sports Facilities Aged Over 20 Years Scheduled This Month

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 6th that it plans to conduct inspections this month by selecting vulnerable facilities during the thawing period (February to April) among public sports facilities in the province to prevent casualties and property damage caused by facility defects or other disasters ahead of the spring season.

The main inspection targets are about 40 public sports facilities in the province that have been installed for over 20 years and have become aged, with safety inspections conducted collaboratively by the provincial government, administrative cities, and eup/myeon/dong offices.

Safety inspections will include visual checks by facility category, with minor issues corrected immediately on-site through repair and reinforcement, and facilities requiring detailed safety diagnoses will be promptly improved.

In particular, buildings rated ‘C’ or below in safety based on detailed inspections will be jointly inspected by the managing agency along with private experts (such as professional engineers, professors, and public corporation employees).

Additionally, pre-inspections will be promoted by each facility management entity at five public sports facility construction sites in the province to prevent safety accidents caused by temporary retaining walls, slopes, facility collapses, overturning, and falling rocks.

Oh Seong-yul, Director of the Jeju Provincial Office of Culture, Sports and Education, said, “In preparation for the upcoming spring season, we will do our best to remove safety risk factors in public sports facilities in advance and improve inconveniences through focused inspections so that residents can enjoy sports activities safely and conveniently.”
