[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] Military authorities are making every effort to search for missing persons following a fishing vessel accident off the coast of Sinan, Jeollanam-do.
According to the military on the 5th, three naval vessels including Jeonbukham, Kim Chang-hakham, and Jeon Byeong-ikham, one P-3 maritime patrol aircraft, and five members of the Navy Special Salvage Unit (SSU) were deployed to the accident area that morning. Additionally, two Air Force helicopters (HH-60, HH-47) and four Air Force Search and Rescue Technicians (SART) also participated in the search operation. Gimpo-ham, Tongyeong-ham, a Navy Lynx helicopter, and SSU rescue team members are also scheduled to be additionally deployed to the accident site.
The Navy has stationed one UH-60 helicopter and four members of the Special Salvage Unit in Mokpo in preparation for additional deployment. A military official stated, "We are fully committed to search and rescue efforts in cooperation with the Coast Guard."
At around 11:19 p.m. the previous day, a 24-ton trap fishing vessel carrying 12 people capsized 16.6 km west of Daebichi-do, Jaewon-ri, Imja-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. Three crew members were rescued immediately after the accident, but nine are still missing. President Yoon Suk-yeol instructed Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop that morning to deploy additional naval special forces for the search and rescue of the missing persons.
