"Starting Right Now" ... Public Institutions Take the Lead in Realizing Carbon Neutral City Busan

Greenhouse Gas Target Management System, Expansion to Investment and Contribution Institutions

Building Consensus Among Citizens, Society, and Businesses and Encouraging Practical Actions

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Busan City is taking the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the public sector and practicing carbon-neutral lifestyles to realize a carbon-neutral city by 2050.

The current national policy greenhouse gas reduction systems, such as the "Emission Trading Scheme and Greenhouse Gas·Energy Target Management System," are implemented for public corporations, public institutions, and administrative agencies, but are not applied to funded and affiliated institutions.

Busan City will not stop there and aims to leap forward as a "2050 Carbon-Neutral Leading City" by independently expanding the target management system to include funded and affiliated institutions.

Funded and affiliated institutions will proactively promote carbon neutrality in the public sector with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, while the city and public corporations and institutions will continue to reduce greenhouse gases according to the current system and strengthen the encouragement of all employees to practice carbon-neutral lifestyles.

In particular, the city and 25 public institutions will carry out reduction projects such as ▲expanding renewable energy like solar power ▲purchasing eco-friendly vehicles ▲replacing with high-efficiency devices like LED lights, as well as efforts to reduce greenhouse gases in daily life, including ▲conducting employee carbon neutrality education ▲maintaining appropriate office temperatures ▲using reusable cups ▲using public transportation ▲holding paperless meetings.

To ensure this policy is well established, the city will promote carbon-neutral culture expansion through institution-specific carbon neutrality pledges and practice campaigns, conduct consulting and monitoring on greenhouse gas reduction operations, and check compliance, providing incentives such as awards to outstanding institutions.

Lee Geun-hee, Director of the Environmental Policy Office of the city, said, "I hope this policy will be an opportunity to get closer to realizing 'Busan, the 2050 Carbon-Neutral Leading City.' Since carbon neutrality is a task that everyone must achieve together, we will continue to carry out expansion campaigns so that practicing carbon neutrality in daily life can be established among citizens and businesses."
