[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Wang Yi, member of the Communist Party Central Political Bureau of China, stated regarding the U.S. announcement that a Chinese "reconnaissance balloon" violated U.S. airspace, "We will not accept any groundless speculation or false propaganda."

According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 4th, Wang Yi said during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken on the 3rd, "China is a responsible country that has consistently and strictly adhered to international law," and added, "We will not accept any groundless speculation or false propaganda."

He further emphasized, "When faced with unexpected situations, both sides must maintain focus, communicate in a timely manner, avoid misjudgments, and manage and control differences."

On the 3rd, China acknowledged the entry into U.S. airspace of the object identified by the U.S. as a "reconnaissance balloon," stating it was a "civilian airship mainly used for meteorological observation." China expressed regret over the incident and explained that the entry was unavoidable due to the westerly winds and loss of control of the airship, and stated it would communicate with the U.S. for appropriate handling.

However, immediately after China's expression of regret, Secretary Blinken announced the postponement of his planned visit to China, stating, "We are confident that this is a Chinese reconnaissance balloon," and added, "We will continue to engage with China until this issue is resolved."
