Seoul Metro 'Urban Shared Logistics Platform' Logistics Technology Award

Recognized for Vision and Technical Excellence

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Seoul Metro announced on the 3rd that its urban joint logistics platform, a proprietary business model, won the 2022 Logistics Technology Award. In particular, through the evaluation by the 'Korea Logistics Technology Society Review Committee,' the company was recognized for its contribution to advancing the logistics industry through the vision and technological capabilities of its logistics platform.

The company began building the logistics platform starting with the directly operated parcel lockers launched in September 2018. Since then, the logistics platform has gradually evolved to include self-storage warehouse services for storing personal and corporate goods within stations, manned storage facilities that store carriers and deliver them to airports when needed, among other services. Usability was also enhanced by implementing convenient access through a mobile phone app.

The company is realizing its vision of building a logistics platform by utilizing subway facilities. Although there was regret that the vision of using vast urban vehicle depots as logistics hubs could not be realized due to development restrictions, this issue was resolved as the company led the legislative notice for the amendment of the Urban Railway Act.

The logistics platform, boasting excellent vision and technological capabilities, has been reflected in the mid- to long-term logistics business plans of Seoul City and the government. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced in the 1st Basic Plan for the Development of the Living Logistics Service Industry that it will advance the living logistics industry by developing underground delivery technology within urban areas using urban railways. Seoul City also stated in the 2040 Seoul Urban Master Plan report that it will establish hub logistics complexes by utilizing spaces such as urban railway sites to build a smart urban logistics system.

Lee Eun-gi, Head of the New Growth Division at Seoul Metro, expressed, “This award is the fruit of efforts to gradually prepare a logistics system that only the company could propose since 2018.” He added, “Going forward, we will concretize person-to-person delivery (P2P) using the newly established infrastructure (parcel lockers, manned storage facilities, etc.) and strive to develop vehicle depots into logistics hub spaces.”
