Gongpyeong Urban Ruins Exhibition Hall Realized with Latest Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Gongpyeong Urban Relics Exhibition Hall, a branch of the Seoul Museum of History, announced on the 3rd that it has prepared an experiential service that allows visitors to vividly learn about Gongpyeong-dong during the Joseon Dynasty.
The Gongpyeong Urban Relics Exhibition Hall is a site museum that preserves the traces of Gongpyeong-dong from the Joseon Dynasty intact. It is regarded as a successful development case that simultaneously guaranteed the developers' interests and preserved urban relics at the time of its creation.
Gongpyeong-dong, where the exhibition hall is located, was part of Gyeonpyeongbang (堅平坊) in Jungbu (中部), one of the five administrative districts (bu, 部) of Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty, situated at the center of Hanyang. Currently, only the remains of buildings and alleyways from the Joseon period remain, limiting the ability to imagine and experience the appearance of Gongpyeong-dong during that era.
The Gongpyeong Urban Relics Exhibition Hall's augmented reality (AR) experiential service developed content over the past year using AR technology to provide visitors with a vivid exhibition experience that reveals the appearance of Gongpyeong-dong in the Joseon Dynasty.
The content was developed as an immersive experience that reproduces the alleys and buildings of Gongpyeong-dong during the Joseon period, allowing visitors to explore the urban relics' space through augmented reality. The experience can be enjoyed starting next February using tablet PCs provided at the exhibition hall and visitors' own smartphones.
Kim Yong-seok, director of the Seoul Museum of History, said, “The Gongpyeong Urban Relics Exhibition Hall AR experiential service we have prepared this time will provide a more unique and informative exhibition experience by reproducing the appearance of Gongpyeong-dong during the Joseon Dynasty, which could previously only be seen through traces, using advanced technology.” The exhibition hall is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed every Monday except on public holidays.
