KAIST Opens Specialized Research Center on the Afternoon of the 2nd

South Korea has begun developing technology to collectively operate various types of satellites in order to enhance its precise monitoring capabilities of North Korean nuclear activities.

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) held an opening ceremony for the "Heterogeneous Satellite Constellation Space Surveillance and Reconnaissance Technology Specialized Research Center (HSRC)" at its headquarters in Daejeon on the afternoon of the 2nd. This center was established to secure core foundational technologies for future space surveillance systems by utilizing various satellites operating in space and to cultivate related specialized personnel. In the paradigm of the New Space era, satellite technology is shifting towards miniaturization and networking. The center will research basic technologies related to the design and operation of (ultra) small heterogeneous satellite constellations. This is to secure innovative surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities by utilizing a collection of multiple heterogeneous satellites equipped with different mission payloads.

Supported by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration as part of the Defense Core Technology Development project and managed by the Agency for Defense Development, a total of 22.1 billion KRW in government funding will be invested by 2028. KAIST serves as the lead research institution, with a consortium of 14 universities and 4 companies forming 4 specialized research laboratories.
