"Burning Daljip to Drive Away Bad Luck" Pohang City Holds Jeongwol Daeboreum Daljip Festival

The ‘Jeongwol Daeboreum Daljip Festival’ is highly anticipated as it will be held face-to-face for the first time in four years since 2019 due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and this year it will take place at two locations: Cheongha-myeon and Yeonil-eup.

This year’s Daljip Festival carries special significance as it prays for the recovery of daily life in the new year after Typhoon Hinnamnor caused material and psychological damage to Pohang last year, and it expresses the citizens’ wishes for health and well-being by burning away old misfortunes in the Daljip.

On the 5th, at Wolpo Beach in Cheongha-myeon, pre-event activities such as singer performances and writing wish fulfillment letters will be held, followed by the burning of a 15-meter large Daljip, a prayer ceremony for citizens’ safety, a bountiful harvest, and a good catch, and a community harmony festival for residents.

On the same day, at the Hyeongsan River embankment near Yugang IC in Yeonil-eup, events including Daljip burning, a safety prayer ceremony, Ganggangsullae and Jisinbalgi performances, wish paper writing, and sharing of rice cake soup will take place.

The city expects many local residents to attend the event held for the first time in four years, and is making every effort to prioritize citizen safety by preparing safety management measures at the venue, conducting joint on-site safety inspections, and preventing fire and mass crowd accidents.
