Incheon Police Conduct Search and Seizure at Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Construction Union Gyeongin Headquarters... Suspected of Joint Coercion

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The police conducted a search and seizure operation on the Gyeongin Headquarters of the Construction Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) in connection with illegal activities at construction sites.

The Metropolitan Investigation Unit of the Incheon Police Agency began searching the office of the KCTU Construction Union Gyeongin Headquarters in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, from around 9:30 a.m. on the 2nd. It is also reported that they visited the homes of union executives to secure mobile phones and tablet PCs.

The police are investigating on the suspicion that the union engaged in illegal activities, such as coercing construction companies to hire union members.

According to the Incheon Headquarters of the KCTU, the search warrant presented by the police on that day specified charges of joint coercion under the Act on the Punishment of Violent Acts against seven union executives.

Earlier, the police launched a large-scale investigation targeting nationwide construction unions, including the KCTU and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) industrial unions.

A police official stated, "It is true that a search and seizure is being conducted, but it is difficult to confirm specific charges or investigation targets."
