[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province is set to establish a railway network extending from Dongcheon Station on the Shinbundang Line to Jukjeon~Mabuk~Dongbaek Station. Alongside this, the city will also promote the extension project of the Gyeonggang Line, connecting Samdong in Gwangju to Mohyeon~Idong~Namsa in Yongin.
Yongin City announced on the 2nd that it plans to commission a feasibility study for the new railway network plan linked with the Shinbundang Line in June. To this end, the city intends to secure a budget of 200 million KRW through the first supplementary budget after internal review within this month.
The study will focus on developing a mid- to long-term plan for new railway networks that connect key areas of the city centered around the Platform City GTX Yongin Station, and efficiently link with surrounding railway networks. In particular, the establishment of a new line connecting Dongcheon Station on the Shinbundang Line to Dongbaek Station on the Yongin Light Rail Transit is a campaign pledge of Mayor Lee Sang-il during his 8th term.
The city will conduct a feasibility study on the construction plan for a branch line of the Shinbundang Line extending from Dongcheon Station to Jukjeon~Mabuk~Dongbaek through this study.
Additionally, if Gyeonggi Province includes the 'Dongbaek~Sinbong Light Rail Transit' line in the 'Gyeonggi-do Urban Railway Network Construction Plan' to be announced in May, the city will also prepare a railway network construction plan linked with this line.
The city will also carry out a preliminary feasibility study for the Gyeonggang Line extension project to establish the optimal route extending from Samdong in Gwangju to Mohyeon~Idong~Namsa in Yongin.
Earlier, on the 27th of last month, the city held a working-level meeting with Gwangju City regarding the Gyeonggang Line extension project and agreed to cooperate jointly to ensure that the extension plan is adopted in the 5th National Railway Network Construction Plan, which will be advanced to 2025.
Mayor Lee Sang-il emphasized, "By establishing a new railway network through route connections, we can improve not only the convenience of citizens' movement but also economic efficiency. We will additionally review the possibility of extending the new railway network to Cheoin-gu and seek a long-term railway network expansion plan that covers the entire city."
