Gyeonggi Province Requests National Assembly Support for 'Establishment of Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province' Issue

Assemblyman Kim Min-cheol: "This Year Is the Golden Time for Establishing Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province"

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province, which is promoting the establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province, has requested support for the relevant project from the National Assembly.

Oh Hu-seok, Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs of Gyeonggi Province, met with Kim Min-chul, Member of the National Assembly (Uijeongbu Eul), on the 31st to discuss current issues related to the establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Autonomous Province.

On the 1st, Gyeonggi Province stated, "Administrative Deputy Governor Oh Hu-seok met with National Assembly member Kim Min-chul (Uijeongbu Eul) on the 31st of last month to discuss issues related to the establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province and requested cooperation at the National Assembly level."

Deputy Governor Oh requested, "The final key to establishing the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province lies with the National Assembly, so please actively cooperate," and Assemblyman Kim emphasized, "The establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province is a long-cherished wish of the northern Gyeonggi residents, and this year is the golden time."

Assemblyman Kim continued, "The most important thing is to unify the opinions of the residents, and to do so, a public discussion process should be conducted followed by a prompt residents' referendum," proposing a residents' referendum at the provincial level.

Earlier, on the 26th of last month, Deputy Governor Oh met with Ahn Seung-dae, Policy Officer for Local Autonomy and Decentralization at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, at the Government Complex Sejong to request cooperation for promoting the establishment of the Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province.

Assemblyman Kim introduced the "Act on the Establishment of Gyeonggi Northern Province, etc." as his first bill in June 2020. Fifty lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties also joined in proposing the bill.
