[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Samsung Electronics unveiled the 'Galaxy S23' series of smartphones with 'unprecedented performance' on the 2nd. Due to increased component costs, the price rose by about 150,000 KRW compared to the previous model. Samsung Electronics will sequentially launch the Galaxy S23 series in global markets, including South Korea, starting from the 17th. In South Korea, pre-orders will be available from the 7th to the 13th.
At 3 a.m. (Korean time) on the same day, Samsung Electronics held 'Galaxy Unpacked 2023' at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, USA, unveiling the flagship Galaxy S23 series for the first half of this year. The lineup consists of the 6.8-inch Galaxy S23 Ultra model, the 6.6-inch Galaxy S23 Plus model, and the 6.1-inch Galaxy S23 base model. Tae-moon Roh, President and Head of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Experience (MX) Business Division, stated, "The Galaxy S23 series redefines the standard for premium smartphone performance and is the best among all previous Galaxy S series in terms of both performance and quality. Consumers will not have to worry about choosing between performance and sustainability."
On the 2nd (Korean time), at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, USA, Samsung Electronics MX Division President (CEO) No Tae-moon unveiled the Galaxy S23 series at the 'Galaxy Unpacked 2023'.
Camera Technology Innovation: 200 Million Pixels and Enhanced Image Stabilization
The core feature of the new model is its camera. Samsung combined an improved camera sensor with artificial intelligence (AI)-based innovative technology to enable clear photos to be taken easily and quickly in any environment. The S23 Ultra is equipped with an image sensor featuring 200 million pixels on the rear camera and an f1.7 aperture module. The adaptive pixel technology, which enhances photo shooting efficiency, has been improved. For example, in dark environments, the 200 million pixels are grouped in sets of 16 to convert into 12 million pixels to capture more light. In bright environments, the full 200 million pixels are used to produce high-resolution images.
The optical image stabilization (OIS) angle has been doubled. This stabilizes hand tremors and allows the subject's natural appearance to be captured clearly even while in motion. The front camera supports a 12 million pixel dual-pixel selfie camera. It also includes AI stereo depth technology that analyzes the distance between the camera and the subject and distinguishes the subject from the background more precisely, as well as an AI object recognition engine that finely differentiates features such as hair, eyebrows, and skin. Additionally, instead of the 'Contour Cut' design that surrounds the camera with a square shape, a 'Waterdrop' design has been applied.
Resolving Previous Issues, Best Performance Ever
To resolve controversies over the mandatory application of the Game Optimization Service (GOS) in the previous model, performance has been significantly enhanced. Samsung strengthened its collaboration with Qualcomm to equip the Galaxy S23 with the 'Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy' model. Until now, Samsung Electronics has used a mix of Qualcomm Snapdragon and Exynos chips developed by Samsung's System LSI division in Galaxy smartphones. With the Qualcomm chip, smartphone power efficiency improved by 40%, and graphics processing speed increased by 41% compared to the previous model. The neural processing unit (NPU), responsible for deep learning algorithms central to AI, improved performance by over 40%, optimizing the balance between performance and power consumption in tasks such as photography.
Battery usability has also been improved. The Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 are equipped with 4700mAh and 3900mAh batteries, respectively, increasing capacity by 200mAh compared to their predecessors. The S23 Ultra's battery capacity remains the same at 5000mAh.
The Galaxy S23 series offers robust security features. Samsung's proprietary chipset security platform, 'Samsung Knox Vault,' securely stores users' personal information such as passwords, biometric data, and authentication keys in a separate physical space. The security and privacy features allow users to view at a glance which apps are accessing their information. Users can directly choose whether to allow or deny apps access to their personal data during use.
The product colors are Phantom Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender. Prices (based on 256GB) are 1,599,400 KRW for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, 1,353,000 KRW for the Galaxy S23 Plus, and 1,155,000 KRW for the Galaxy S23.
