Utilizing Visual Thinking Strategy Education
Creating a Self-Portrait Reflecting One's Personality
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City Museum of Art operates the humanities and arts convergence program "Frida Kahlo, Meet Me," which links the humanities and visual elements of books with creative activities.
This education program explores the works and life of Mexican female painter "Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)" through two books: "Frida Kahlo" (text by Lucy Brown Reiss, illustrations by Sandra Darkman) and "My Name is Frida Kahlo" (text by Chabo Geum, illustrations by Kim Minyoung), helping to enhance children's creative thinking skills.
In particular, this program is conducted using the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) method, where participants observe, interpret, and infer from Frida Kahlo's major works, engaging in questioning, sharing opinions, and discussions.
Frida Kahlo lived with disabilities caused by childhood polio and severe aftereffects from a spinal injury at age 18, expressing the pain she felt through her art.
During long periods bedridden due to illness, she mainly painted her reflection in a mirror hanging from the ceiling. In this program, participants closely examine Frida Kahlo's self-portraits and create their own self-portraits expressing their outward appearance, inner self, emotions, and personality.
The program is open to all elementary school students residing in Pohang and will be held every weekend from February 11 to 25, divided into morning and afternoon sessions.
Detailed information can be found on the museum’s official website.
