[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The sentencing trial for Korea Steel and its CEO, who were prosecuted under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, has been postponed, drawing significant attention as the first verdict in such cases.
According to the legal community on the 1st, the sentencing date for Korea Steel and its CEO, charged with violating the Serious Accidents Punishment Act (industrial accident causing death) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act, has been tentatively postponed. The Changwon District Court had originally scheduled the verdict for the 3rd but decided to hold another trial session on the 24th of next month.
Previously, Korea Steel and its CEO were under investigation following an accident on March 16 last year at Korea Steel in Haman, Gyeongnam, where a man in his 60s, Mr. A, fell from a crane and was crushed by a 1.2-ton heat shield, resulting in his death.
The prosecution judged that Korea Steel and its CEO failed to fulfill their safety and health obligations, such as establishing 'performance evaluation standards for safety and health management officers,' thereby causing Mr. A's death, and brought the case to trial.
In the trial held in December last year, the prosecution demanded a fine of 150 million KRW for the Korea Steel corporation and a two-year prison sentence for the CEO.
