[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Chunsu Kim] The Agricultural Technology Center of Hampyeong-gun, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 1st that it is urging thorough crop management to minimize onion damage caused by heavy snow and cold waves.
Recently, the severe cold has been prevailing, with average temperatures dropping below freezing.
In particular, this year the average temperature in Hampyeong-gun is 0.3℃, which is lower than the usual 0.9℃, requiring even more careful attention.
Onions can suffer from frost damage when the winter weather is cold and rainy.
When the soil temperature drops below 0℃ and moisture freezes, the soil expands, causing the roots to be pushed upward and damaged.
To prevent such frost damage, drainage channels should be created at least 20cm deep to prevent water from pooling on the field after snow or rain.
Onions that have already suffered frost damage can resume growth if the roots are replanted into the soil and properly covered.
Park Eunha, director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “We will continuously monitor winter weather conditions and strengthen on-site technical support to produce high-quality onions.”
