When Absent for Extended Periods, Turn Off Cold and Hot Water Faucets
A hose connected to the water supply and washing machine came off while the house was left unattended, resulting in a water bill of approximately 6.5 million won.
On the 1st, several online communities sparked attention by posting a photo of a notice stating that a resident who had been away for a long time received a massive water bill. According to the posted photo, an apartment management office posted a notice titled "Washing Machine Hose (Cold/Hot Water) Inspection Notice" on the bulletin board on the 27th of last month.
The notice explained, "In the first-floor unit of ***-dong, the hot water hose of the washing machine came off during a long absence, and 1,108 tons of hot water were recorded," adding, "As a result, an unprecedented situation occurred with a water bill of about 6.5 million won."

It continued, "Therefore, at the 152nd Residents' Representative Meeting (January 16), a decision was made to allow payment in 12 installments due to excessive usage charges," and emphasized, "Residents are urged to check the washing machine hose once again to prevent such incidents in advance." It also added, "When going away for an extended period, please be sure to turn off both the cold and hot water faucets connected to the washing machine hose."
In response to the enormous bill, netizens expressed sympathy, but some reacted with disbelief, saying, "How could the water be running if the washing machine wasn't even operating?"
In a typical household, the water faucets are always open, allowing water to flow into the washing machine through the hose. When the washing machine's start button is pressed, power is supplied to the solenoid water valve, which pulls the solenoid and opens the plate blocking the water, allowing water to enter the washing machine.
When water enters the washing machine, a water level sensor detects the amount of water needed for washing and signals to cut off power to the water valve, starting the washing process. However, since most people do not turn off the cold and hot water faucets after using the washing machine, it appears that water leakage occurred.
