[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Kim Kwang-soo, a member of the Gwangju Nam-gu Council, urged the establishment of measures to improve the treatment of life support workers.

On the 1st, Councilor Kim made a 5-minute speech on this matter at the 1st plenary session of the 291st extraordinary meeting.

Gwangsu Kim, Member of Gwangju Nam-gu Council, "Support Workers' Treatment Must Be Improved"

Councilor Kim explained, "As of the end of 2022, the elderly population aged 65 and over in our country exceeds 9 million, accounting for 17.5% of the total population, and it is expected that by the end of 2025, the proportion of elderly people will exceed 20%, entering a super-aged society."

He added, "Nam-gu also carries out the customized elderly care service project through life support workers at three institutions, but the monthly allowance of 1.1 million won is far too low compared to the dedication of the life support workers."

To improve the treatment of life support workers, he proposed three measures: ▲ improvement of the allowance system ▲ creation of an environment where comprehensive support such as grievance counseling can be received ▲ thorough management and supervision of institutions entrusted with carrying out the customized elderly care service project.

Councilor Kim said, "I hope that through improving the treatment of life support workers, fundamentally, an environment can be created that provides better qualitative service improvement to the elderly."
