[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeonbuk Gochang-gun announced on the 1st that the thousand-year-old temple Seonunsa will not charge an admission fee starting from the 1st to wish for the success of the Gochang Visit Year.
County Governor Shim Deok-seop presided over an expanded executive meeting on the same day and said, “We thank Seonunsa and Ven. Gyungyu, the head monk, for making a magnanimous decision for the success of the Gochang Visit Year,” adding, “As an important temple holding eight nationally designated treasures, the county will also actively cooperate in the management and protection of cultural assets.”
Seonunsan, a representative tourist destination of Gochang-gun, was visited by 1,958,000 people in 2019 alone, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The nationally designated treasures include ▲Seonunsa Gilt-bronze Jizang Bodhisattva Seated Statue ▲Seonunsa Dosolam Gilt-bronze Jizang Bodhisattva Seated Statue ▲Gochang Seonunsa Daeungjeon (Main Buddha Hall) ▲Gochang Chamdangam Daeungjeon ▲Gochang Seonunsa Dongbulamji Rock-carved Seated Buddha Statue ▲Seonunsa Wood-carved Vairocana Triad Seated Statue ▲Seonunsa Chamdangam Stone-carved Jizang Bodhisattva Seated Statue ▲Seonunsa Manseru Pavilion.
Also, in spring, camellia flowers bloom, and in autumn, red spider lilies bloom in full, attracting numerous tourists.
The county expects that the decision to make Seonunsa admission free will give a boost to tourism in Gochang.
Previously, the county promoted the ‘2023 World Heritage City Gochang Visit Year’ by converting the full admission fees of Gochang Eupseong Fortress and Dolmen Museum into Gochang Love Gift Certificates, effectively making them free.
