Current Yeongdeungpo-gap Party Committee Chairman
Running for Supreme Council Member in March 8 Party Convention
"Party Innovation Needed for Yoon Government's Success"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Moon Byung-ho, the head of the People Power Party's Yeongdeungpo Gap district committee, announced on the 1st that he will run for the Supreme Council member election at the March 8 party convention.
On the same day, Moon said in a phone interview with Asia Economy, "For the success of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, the party must take the path of change and innovation," adding, "I will take the lead in next year's general election together with Ahn Cheol-soo, the party representative candidate."
Moon is a two-term lawmaker who served in the 17th and 19th National Assembly. He was a key figure in founding the People’s Party and the Bareunmirae Party, and in 2020, he transferred his party affiliation to the People Power Party. He is an alumnus of Seoul National University Law School alongside President Yoon Seok-yeol and was a judicial training institute classmate of Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea.
Politically, he has shared his views with Representative Ahn Cheol-soo. Moon said, "I am not consulting with Candidate Ahn in advance before running," but added, "I will work with Candidate Ahn to transform the party’s constitution and become a driving force for a landslide victory in next year’s general election."
He emphasized, "If the party continues as it is, there is a high possibility of failure in next year’s general election," and stressed, "We must boldly change the party through expanding its base and innovation to achieve an overwhelming victory in next year’s general election."
He continued, "Politics has walked the path of victory by blending and uniting various forces, but now the party seems to be heading toward purism," and said, "We must achieve expansion of the base and innovative change."
On the 3rd, Moon plans to register as a candidate for the Supreme Council member election and hold an official press conference to announce his candidacy.
