Gyeonggi-do to Operate Carbon Neutral Schools This Year... 40 Schools Selected Gyeonggi-do Model Carbon Neutral School Recruitment Announcement Poster

[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has decided to operate carbon-neutral schools this year and is recruiting 40 elementary, middle, and high schools in the province to participate in the 'Gyeonggi Province-type Carbon-Neutral School' program until the 24th of this month.

The Gyeonggi Province-type Carbon-Neutral School is a pledge project of Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province during the 8th term of local government, aimed at responding to the climate crisis. It will operate a comprehensive carbon-neutral program for each school, from carbon-neutral education to practice.

The province has allocated 100 million won in the main budget this year, providing 2 million won per school. First, carbon-neutral education will be supported for school members, conducting one hour of basic carbon-neutral education for all classes in a certain grade and two hours of advanced education for environmental clubs.

Additionally, 60 specialized carbon-neutral education instructors will be trained and deployed to schools. These instructors will build a carbon-neutral education curriculum using the 'Climate Change Textbook' produced by the province and conduct thorough education.

The province will also support environmental clubs in schools with activity funds worth 500,000 won. At the end of the year, an environmental club performance presentation will be held to spread exemplary cases of youth involvement in carbon neutrality and the environment throughout the province.

Furthermore, a 'Climate Change Textbook' for youth will be produced and distributed to Gyeonggi Province-type Carbon-Neutral Schools, along with carbon-neutral education materials and tools such as the Climate Magic Storybook and Micro Solar Oven.

Greenhouse gas diagnostic consultants will also be dispatched to schools to encourage the reduction of carbon emissions within the schools.

Park Rae-hyuk, Director of the Climate Environment Policy Division of the province, emphasized, "Through the operation of the 'Gyeonggi Province-type Carbon-Neutral School,' we will strengthen youth capabilities to respond to the climate crisis and establish a culture of carbon-neutral practice, doing our best to create a sustainable Gyeonggi."
