The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will announce the results of the 2023 middle school new student assignment at 10 a.m. on the 2nd.
The 2023 middle school new student assignment was conducted under the supervision of the Gangdong-Songpa Education Support Office. Among the 11 education support offices, 67,356 new students were assigned to 383 schools and 2,683 classes this year. The average number of students per class is 25.1.
The number of new middle school students this year increased by 2,806 (4.35%) compared to last year, which is analyzed to be due to the children born in 2010 during the "White Tiger Year" birth boom entering school.
This middle school new student assignment is conducted based on residence, using a computerized lottery by school district as a principle, while considering students' commuting convenience and balanced placement among schools.
In particular, from this year, the assignment method for students with special athletic talents has changed, and they are assigned in order of highest scores by desired school according to evaluation criteria. Until last year, when the number of applicants for each sport exceeded the quota, assignments were randomly drawn, which led to complaints about the assignment criteria.
Students from families with three or more children can apply to be assigned to the school where their siblings are enrolled; accordingly, a total of 2,207 students were assigned to the same school this year.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will notify the results via text message on the day of the announcement, the 2nd, using the guardian's mobile phone number provided during the application. Also, guardians can verify the assignment results after identity verification on the websites of the respective education support offices in their residential jurisdiction.
Furthermore, the "2023 Middle School Assignment Notice" will be distributed from 10 a.m. on the 2nd at elementary schools and education support offices. Graduates or prospective graduates of elementary schools in Seoul can receive it at their respective elementary schools, while those who passed the qualification exam or graduated from elementary schools in other cities or provinces can receive it at the relevant education support office. New students must register for admission at the assigned middle school from the 2nd to the 3rd after receiving the assignment notice.
After middle school assignment, students whose entire family has moved to Seoul from other cities or provinces, or who have changed school districts within Seoul due to residence relocation, must complete a reassignment application within the designated period to be reassigned to a school. The reassignment application period is from the 6th to the 8th, and detailed information is available on the websites of the respective education support offices in their residential jurisdiction.
